Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic acid is a mucopolysaccharide found naturally in our skin. Our body generates it from birth to regulate hydration of the epidermis. It has the capacity to absorb and retain large amounts of water; it is like a “sponge” capable of holding more than 1,000 times its weight in water.

The amount of hyaluronic acid which we naturally synthesise determines the elasticity and firmness of our skin. At an early age, we produce high quantities on the acid; around the age of 40, its production is reduced by half and by the age of 60, it barely reaches 10% of the amount we produce in childhood.

The most visible effects of this reduction in hyaluronic acid in our body are the appearance of the first fine lines, changes in the elasticity and flexibility of the skin, decreased turgidity and increased dryness and roughness.

There are two types of hyaluronic acid:

  • High molecular weight hyaluronic acid (1-1.5 million Dalton), which penetrates less deeply into the skin, yet has an extraordinary capacity for hydration, forming a thin nonocclusive film on the skin, which acts as a moisturising agent. It also has a great smoothing effect on wrinkles.
  • Low molecular weight hyaluronic acid (20,000 to 50,000 Dalton) is acid that penetrates deeper into the skin, enabling the skin to fill in wrinkles from the inside, thereby retaining water in the intercellular matrix of connective tissue. It is capable of reducing deep wrinkles, slowing down the skin ageing process, regenerating and contributing a high level of elasticity to the skin.

The hyaluronic acid used in the production of JEWEL BEAUTY creams is low in molecular weight. It does not come from animals. It is obtained from the fermentation of wheat peptone, yeast extract and glucose.
